We had a wonderful weekend, and I have a lot to share, however, I wanted to get this on here first. I had an extremely HAPPY BIRD WATCHING MOMENT today! We saw a Great Blue Heron fly over Highway 12 on the way out of Walla Walla this afternoon and decided to take a left turn onto a county road to try to find it...We found the one heron, but the cool part was that he was surrounded in American White Pelicans!
I have heard that these majestic big belly birds were showing up in our Pacific Northwest more and more each year lately, but I had no idea! When we first walked up to the river and saw the group I was estimating about 20-30. After I snuck up on them so close that they took flight, I snapped a few shots (one of which I counted over 80 birds in)! Wow! Did you know these big migrating birds have a wingspan of 9-10 feet? They also eat an average of 3 pounds of fish each a day. I'm thinking that the Walla Walla River either has a lot of fish, or a huge sudden shortage.
In this first shot you can see the Great Blue Heron in the left foreground.
And a video clip...
More on the camping weekend very soon...
