...or at least they could be Martha's (or Stewart's) offspring. I'd say 300-400 baby spiders were gathered in two big groups (see photo; one group in foreground, one in background) were hatched out our front door this week. Unfortunately, each evening as we went outside with the flashlight to watch the little ragamuffins scatter and crawl around, they were also being eaten by the variety of spider species that were gathered around them for a feast. I cried out to Jeff to remove the other spiders, but alas Max said, "It is nature Mom!" and I had to let it be. I guess this is why we only have one or two come autumn.
SUNDAY HIKE...
I'm not quite sure how we ended up at White Rock Mountain, but Jeff had a suggestion to go to the general area, a GPS, google earth, the Geocaching site with leads, and we were off! Here is the mountain as we approached. The white rock we later discovered is large amounts of quartz.
I was surprised as we entered the roped off road that held the sign "please shut gate behind you" and a "lots for sale" sign. Who would live up here, in the middle of nowhere, on this rickety, barely drivable road? Turns out, a lot of people! I could not believe how many little roads and trailers, and log cabins we encountered on the way to the base of the mountain. We finally came upon "Charm" road which (on the GPS) looked like the most direct route up to the top. We stopped, parked, and walked the couple mile hike up and down the mountain.
It was a wonderful hike; just the right length, through deep dark forest as well as open desert rocks, lots of wild flowers, views of three lakes, chunks of quartz, plenty of deer poop and even an animal trap pit of some sort (how cool!), a couple snakes, and our fist ever encounter with a hummer nest (the highlight of the day)! Mom and Dad, the kids so enjoyed their camelbak paks! We all were so happy to have them along in the heat! Thank you for the wonderful Birthday gifts! Max even brought home a few rocks in his.
Pogue Mountain on Monday
We took another little hike on Monday, but not to the destination we had planned. We've been trying to figure out how to get to the top of Pogue Mountain to see the view of town, but haven't had much luck. We keep running into dead ends, private property, or trails that show up on our GPS (but do not appear to be public trails). We've been getting a few pointers from friends this week since the hike, and ready to try again. It was still a great work out and a pretty view of Salmon Creek area.
